Can Physical Therapy Help with My Osteoarthritis?

by Blue Sky Therapy

At Blue Sky Physical Therapy, we can help you fight back against osteoarthritis (OA) and gain the strength to get back to the activities you love! To better understand how physical therapy can help your OA, it is essential first to understand what OA is.

What is Osteoarthritis?

OA is a disease that affects the articular cartilage (the tissue covering the ends of bones) of any given joint as well as the bones, ligaments, joint capsule, membrane, and muscles that surround the joint. Osteoarthritis is a condition that can have a significant impact on daily living by reducing or hindering a person’s ability to walk, dance, ride a bike, or climb stairs.

These limitations can hold you back from doing the things that you enjoy and keep you from reaching your full potential each day. Because it affects so many structures in the body, it can seem like a daunting disease that may only be managed with invasive treatment such as injection or surgery.

Physical therapy is a great non-invasive option to help treat arthritis. Although physical therapy can't reverse the effects, it can help limit the pain and symptoms associated with this disease and can help you get back on track!

Physical therapy can help alleviate the symptoms of arthritis in the following ways:

Improve Your Range of Motion to Get Moving Again!

  1. OA can affect the joint as well as the capsule and ligaments surrounding the joint. This usually results in a painful and limited range of motion that can limit your body's full ability to move.

  2. To help alleviate this symptom and improve your range of motion, the physical therapists at Blue Sky Therapy can teach you to stretch the appropriate system of muscles. This will help you to regain some of your motion and reduce the pain through movement.

  3. Our highly trained therapists will use special techniques to address the stiffness in your joints that will enable the bones that help the joint slide and glide move in a smoother more pain-free manner, allowing you to thoroughly enjoy all the fun of activities like swimming or riding your bicycle!

  4. Get Moving and Grooving to Improve Your Mobility!

  5. If one joint is limited in strength or range of motion, you can stretch or improve motion in an adjacent joint to help compensate for the lack in movement or to improve your overall mobility.

    • For example, if you have arthritis in your lower back that limits your vertebrae from twisting and sliding on each other, this is limiting your ability to turn around and look over your shoulder. If you improve the range of motion in your hips, your body could compensate for the lack of movement in your lower back. This can help you get back your groove back and get those hips shaking out on the dance floor in no time!

  6. Build Your Strength!

  7. The pain and range of motion restriction associated with OA can cause muscle weakness. The more pain you have in your joint, the less likely you are to move the joint, causing the muscles surrounding the joint to become weak. We can help you gently target and strengthen the surrounding muscles to help stabilize the joint.

  8. This will also help reduce the pain response surrounding the joint while improving your endurance for activities like walking, swimming, and dancing so you can get back to living life to the fullest.

  9. Improve Your Movement and Feel like a Million Bucks!

  10. The physical therapists at Blue Sky Therapy are the movement experts. Through our expert observations, we see in many people, abnormal movement patterns such as poor posture, poor lifting form or certain curves in the spine can have detrimental effects on the way our bones and joints move upon each other.

  11. By improving simple movement patterns and posture you can reduce abnormal and unwanted pressure through certain body parts and allow your body to distribute the forces of gravity in the most natural way possible, helping you enjoy your favorite activities like taking a nice relaxing walk through the park or tearing up the dance floor without pain and discomfort!
